The Canadian-Caribbean Arts Network (C-CAN) is a collective of artists and professionals. It is spearheading the first ever Caribbean Diaspora contingent officially invited to participate in CARIFESTA 2017.
It is especially significant that Canada, the world leader in diversity and multi-culturalism, should be the first country to be invited to send a Diaspora Contingent to CARIFESTA.
Financing for this initiative will come from public and private agencies, as well as from the fundraising efforts of the participating artists and organizations themselves.
The leadership team for this initiative will include Michael G-A. Lashley (Chef de Mission and Project Manager) and Rhoma Spencer (Artistic Director).
The artistic fields that will be represented in the contingent include Dance, Music, Theatre, Storytelling and Spoken Word. In addition two of C-CAN artists will present academic papers at Carifesta Symposia.
The very nature of the project effectively demonstrates that the vitality of Canadian society finds its origin in the cultural and ethnic diversity of the people who make Canada their home.
In the two-way process of cross fertilization, both artistic communities benefit. The Canadian-Caribbean artists will strengthen their Caribbean aesthetic, while the Caribbean-based artists will benefit from exposure to a wider range of best practices in artistic development, artistic production and artistic management.
