Pierre Kwenders celebrates release of new album with Toronto show

with DATU, OBUXUM & DJ Sean Sax

Congolese via Montreal artist Pierre Kwenders returns to Toronto on September 15th in support of his brand new record MAKANDA at The End of Space, the Beginning of Time.

Pierre Kwenders’ music is a response to a world that so often asks people who fit comfortably in multiple boxes to pick only one. While Pierre’s music ranges from icy R&B to futuristic hip-hop, his style is rooted in Congolese rumba, the ubiquitous sound of The Democratic Republic of Congo. With his new full-lenght album, out on September 2017, Pierre looks to build on the success of his debut. Produced entirely by Seattle-based Fly Guy Dai (aka Tendai Maraire of Shabazz Palaces), this new album pivots from Bantou's housey thump to something more instrumental, incorporating strong African influence and old-school West Coast hip-hop vibes into Kwenders unique recipe.

Joining Kwenders on September 15th at Toronto's Rivoli is Electronic-tribal music duo DATU a modern Filipino music group, consisting of producers Alexander Junior (formerly of Times Neue Roman, and Styrofoam Ones), and Romeo Candido (formerly of KUYA, and Prison Dancer). DATU showcases movement, gongs, and storytelling through singing and rap, reinvigorating traditional Filipino music with their cultural transcendence, creating a brand new sound. After years of producing and collaborating with other Filipino-Canadian artists like Toronto rapper Han Han and dance troupe HATAW, DATU's debut EP, High Blood dropped in July 2017 and is a unique blend of traditional and new, delivering a fresh take on the alt-world genre.

Also expect a performance from up and coming young Somali performative- experimental music producer OBUXUM. She's currently working on an a instrumental series called The m3taphor which will consist of intricate samples, soundscapes, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Afro-dance, Dancehall/Reggae, dub and EDM inspired music. The m3taphor EP series serves as an musical reflection of OBUXUM's experiences throughout her daily life and her blooming into a diverse sound artists.

DJ Sean Sax will provide dance floor vibes all night long.
