JAZZ BY GENRE

A new jazz series and festival format designed to represent and showcase jazz through various genres of music. Jazz by Genre is produced by the Nu Jazz Society, a federally incorporated non-profit organization, whose principle aims are to (i) expand the range and reach of jazz music; (ii) develop and leverage the jazz arts; (iii) promote greater cultural and musical diversity in jazz; (iv) encourage youth in the study and practice of jazz; and (v) produce world-class concerts and festivals!

The Jazz by Genre series will run every 3 months before launching its annual jazz festival in summer 2006. The next installment in the series will be "Caribbean Jazz." For this event, currently scheduled for March 2006, Nick "The Brownman" Ali will lead an ensemble cast of local musical jazz greats for some hip-shaking Caribbean jazz & 'breakjazz.'  Stay tuned for info on our surprise Caribbean Jazz Headliner...

BREAKJAZZ

A recently-defined sub-genre of jazz created by combining an acoustic jazz band with one or more DJs and/or turntablists who add improvised electronic elements to the musical performance (e.g. scratching, samples, loops, vocals from a CD, vinyl record or other electronic source )
