Colour at the Oscars...

I’m not really into watching the Oscars. To me, it’s just like any other award show. That means that the person that truly deserves a statue is not necessarily the one to receive it. Think Grammys, the Emmys etc. And for that reason, I steer clear of many award shows. Especially the Oscars.

Well, not this year. When I heard that Three Six Mafia was set to perform “It’s Hard Out There For a Pimp,”—the Oscar nominated song from Hustle & Flow—I knew that this was the year to actually tune in and watch. Honestly, that is huge! This is the very first time that a rap group—a crunkdafied rap group at that—will perform at the Oscars. Eminem didn’t even spit a few lines when “Lose Yourself” was nominated for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture.

So I sat in my cozy family room and counted down the minutes for Three Six Mafia to set foot on stage. Around 10:20ish they appeared.

Their performance was flashy, loud and ghettofab......just what the Oscars needed. The show is always so boring, corny and dull. Seeing the choreographed pimps and prostitutes on stage was a little bizarre, but overall, I liked that the Oscars finally appeared to be more modern. It appealed to the mainstream rather than a bunch of stuffy cineastes.

But the climax of the 10-hour long show (okay, it wasn’t 10 hours, but it felt like it!), was that Three Six Mafia actually won the Oscar for Best Song! I have never jumped so high in my entire life. Watching this rap group run to the podium and receive their statue was something I will never forget. They seemed truly surprised, happy and appreciative. I was shocked too, but I was glad that they won!

Even though I am not a Three Six Mafia fan, I hope that they pave the way for future hip hop acts to take to the stage at the Oscars.

You know Kanye is complaining somewhere that he should have been at the Oscars!

Peace & love!
