Black Star: Celebrating 100 Years of Black Excellence on Screen
In collaboration with the British Film Institute, TIFF presents Black Star. From Paul Robeson, Lena Horne, Sidney Poitier, Richard Pryor and Diana Ross to Denzel Washington, Danny Glover, Queen Latifah, Will Smith and David Oyelowo, this expansive retrospective celebrates 100 years of Black excellence on screen.
The series runs November 3 to December 22 at TIFF Bell Lightbox.
TIFF is honoured to have Black Star curator Ashley Clark introduce the opening weekend of screenings. Guest speakers will frame the discussions, including writer and cléo editor Lydia Ogwang on Haile Gerima’s stark 1975 film Bush Mama, and rapper Kardinal Offishall on John Landis’ 1988 culture-clash comedy Coming to America.
