Thomas Francis "The Jazz Gene"
THE JAZZ GENE
Showcasing 100 Years of Black Music
February 22 - Small World Music Centre
TORONTO - Exploring the jazz gene, pianist Thomas Francis tackles the relationship between jazz and Black music when he performs on Friday, February 22, 2019 at Small World Music Centre as part of the TD Discovery Series Special Projects.
In this two-part Special Project, Francis will show how jazz aesthetics exist within various forms of Black music, breaking down the "physical" and "functional" elements that make up the jazz gene. Francis will trace the lineage of jazz and the crucial role the gene has played in the evolution of Black music throughout the 20th century, specifically exploring the idea that hip-hop music would not exist without this jazz gene.
For this unique performance, Francis will perform two back-to-back shows, highlighting the underlying fundamentals that connect jazz to other Black music. The first show (7 p.m.) will be an acoustic performance focused on the aesthetics of jazz from a post-jazz perspective. The second show (9 p.m.) will be an electric performance that focuses on hip-hop and its influences from the beginnings of jazz. Tickets are required for each show.
One of Toronto's leading pianists, Thomas Francis is well-known for his extensive background in jazz and soul-based music. Thomas can often be seen playing with JUNO winning jazz vocalist Kellylee Evans and singer-songwriter Elise LeGrow and especially in his element with his instrumental hip-hop / jazz ensemble, Thomas Francis Friends.
The TD Discovery Series is a year-long initiative of music and educational performances created by Toronto Downtown Jazz, producers of the Toronto Jazz Festival, and supported by TD Bank Group. Designed to encourage the creation, development and presentation of unique new programming, the TD Discovery Series showcases some of Toronto's finest local jazz talent.
