Her sophomore recording “Fenfo” was just nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award - Best World Music Album. In addition, her collaboration with English electronic music duo Disclosure - "Ultimatum" (featuring Fatoumata Diawara) – received a 2019 Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance Recording (Dance/Electronic Music).
Having exploded onto the scene in 2011 and establishing herself as one of the most inventive singers and electric guitarists in Mali, singer, actress and activist Fatoumata Diawara has taken her artistry to thrilling new heights with “Fenfo,” covering a breadth of African styles, from slow-burning blues to simmering funk. The Guardian’s four-star review hailed it as “a seductive marriage of ancient and modern.”
“Fenfo” defines Fatoumata Diawara as the voice of young African womanhood – proud of her heritage but with a vision that looks confidently to the future and with a message that is universal. Boldly experimental yet respectful of her roots “Fenfo” (translates to “something to say”) is the follow up to her debut recording “Fatou,” named one of the top 50 albums of 2011 by British rock magazine UnCut.
Born in the Ivory Coast to Malian parents and now living in France, Fatoumata Diawara moved to France to pursue acting but later took up the guitar and began composing her own material, writing songs that blend Wassalou traditions of Southern Mali with international influences.
Fatoumata Diawara has performed and recorded with Oumou Sangaré, AfroCubism, Dee Dee Bridgewater (on Red Earth: A Malian Journey), and the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, as well as Paul McCartney, Baaba Maal and Damon Albarn as a part of Africa Express.
She was recently awarded the “Chevalier de L’ordre des Arts et Lettres” by the French government, one of the highest French cultural distinctions. As an actress, she starred in the multi-award winning movie Timbuktu, a 2015 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.
Her band is as follows:
