Five-time Dora Award-winning actor Amaka Umeh is set to host the 46th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, presented by the Romano D'Andrea Foundation, on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Toronto's Meridian Hall. Canada's largest and oldest performing arts awards programme will celebrate outstanding achievements across theatre, dance, and opera with 42 gender-inclusive award categories. Nominations will be announced on June 1 at The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre.

Toronto's performing arts community has something major to look forward to this summer. The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) has announced that the 46th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, presented by the Romano D'Andrea Foundation, will take place on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Meridian Hall (1 Front Street East). The evening will be hosted by Amaka Umeh, a celebrated, five-time Dora Award-winning actor of Igbo and Ikwerre (Nigerian) descent whose presence alone signals the kind of bold, culturally grounded energy that makes the Doras one of the most anticipated events on Toronto's cultural calendar.

Known for their commanding performances across some of Canada's most respected stages, Umeh brings a rare combination of theatrical depth, wit, and community spirit to what promises to be an unforgettable night. It will be their first time hosting the Doras, and if their stage history is any indication, audiences at Meridian Hall are in for something truly special.

A host worth celebrating

Umeh's reaction to the news was characteristically warm and eloquent. "In the ever-renewing series of pleasant and unexpected chances with which this dream of a life has endowed me, this is a major plot twist," they shared. "I am deeply honoured to follow in Peter Fernandes' footsteps as this year's Dora Awards host. Thank you, TAPA, for nurturing this ritual: in a world plagued with so much unnecessary destruction, gathering to celebrate our positive creative pursuits is a balm."

Umeh's performance credits span an extraordinary range of work. Recent highlights include:

  • Narnia (Bad Hats Theatre/Soulpepper/Crow's Theatre), where they played the memorably complex Witch
  • A Strange Loop (Soulpepper/Crow's/Musical Stage/TO Live)
  • Three Sisters (Obsidian/Soulpepper)
  • Hamlet and Death and the King's Horseman (Stratford Festival)
  • Sizwe Banzi is Dead (Soulpepper)
  • Fall on Your Knees (Canadian premiere tour)

Their screen work includes Interview with the Vampire (AMC) and The Strangers' Case (CBC Gem). Umeh has also lent their voice to the audiobook of Francesca Ekwuyasi's Butter Honey Pig Bread (ECW Press). In addition to their five Dora Awards for Outstanding Theatre Performance (2019, 2023, 2024, 2025), Umeh holds the Stratford Festival Peter Donaldson Award (2023) and the BBPA Harry Jerome President's Award (2022).

Canada's biggest night for the performing arts

The Dora Mavor Moore Awards are named in honour of Dora Mavor Moore (1888–1979), a trailblazing director and teacher who helped establish professional Canadian theatre in the 1930s and 1940s. Today, the Doras stand as Canada's largest and oldest performing arts awards programme, recognizing excellence across theatre, dance, and opera every year.

This year's ceremony will honour the 2025–2026 season across 42 gender-inclusive categories spanning six divisions: General Theatre, Independent Theatre, Musical Theatre, Dance, Opera, Theatre for Young Audiences, and more. The eligible pool of nominees will be drawn from nearly 200 unique productions presented between May 2025 and May 2026 — a remarkable reflection of the sheer breadth and vitality of Toronto's performing arts sector.

The creative team behind the ceremony

Returning to lead the production is multi-Dora Award-winning producer Victor Pokinko (Executive Producer of Bad Hats Theatre), whose track record includes last year's widely praised ceremony. The script and associate direction come from liza paul (Associate Artistic Director of The Theatre Centre), and this year introduces Stephanie Graham — a Dora Award-winning choreographer — stepping in as director and choreographer for the first time. Rounding out the team are returning collaborators Kelly Read (Production Manager), Kevin Connery of Square Studio (Art Director), and Adam Sakiyama (Music Director).

Pokinko spoke enthusiastically about what audiences can expect. "Last year was a true celebration of Toronto's performing arts industry, both in the Awards themselves and in the laughter, dancing, and camaraderie of the community that gathered," he said. "I can promise you that this year's Awards will bring back accessible pricing while bringing the same, raucous energy to Meridian Hall, with an incredible host, a dynamic ceremony, and exclusive live streams from the red carpet and backstage."

The commitment to accessible pricing is particularly welcome. Early bird tickets are priced at $50 and go on sale Thursday, April 2 at 12 p.m.

How nominees are selected

The Dora Awards are peer-nominated, meaning that respected members of Toronto's professional performing arts community do the work of identifying outstanding achievements. Jurors come from a wide spectrum of disciplines and backgrounds, including performers, designers, directors, producers, administrators, and arts educators. The jury pool reflects a diversity of ages, gender identities, sexualities, experience levels, training backgrounds, and cultural and ethnic affiliations — a deliberate design choice that keeps the awards grounded in the community they serve.

TAPA's Executive Director, annemieke wade, framed the significance of the moment with characteristic candour: "Toronto's performing arts sector continues to set the standard for excellence, innovation, and impact. Their work doesn't just reflect who we are — it shapes who we're becoming, on our stages and far beyond them."

An evening that belongs to the community

The Dora Awards After-Party will follow the ceremony at Meridian Hall, with live music, entertainment, food, and a cash bar. Pokinko was clear that the event is meant to feel welcoming to everyone: "The Doras belong to us all. I hope artists feel welcome regardless of whether they are nominated this year or not, whether they created art this year or not, whether they saw many shows this year or not."

For a community like Toronto's, where Black and racialized artists have long fought for equitable representation on major stages, an evening that centres peer recognition, accessible pricing, and genuine celebration carries particular weight. Amaka Umeh — an artist of Nigerian descent who has repeatedly broken ground at institutions like Soulpepper, Obsidian, and the Stratford Festival — is an inspired choice as host. Their presence at the helm of Canada's most storied performing arts night is itself a statement about where the industry has been, and where it is headed.
