Taskforce Vacancies
The City of Pickering is seeking passionate and committed residents and stakeholder representatives to sit on the Pickering Anti-Black Racism Taskforce (PABRT).
Comprised of up to 20 diverse community stakeholders who identify as Black, the PABRT works in partnership with the City, residents, service providers, businesses, and other stakeholders to enhance the shared experience of diverse Black communities in Pickering.
“The Pickering Anti-Black Racism Taskforce was first established in 2020 to address anti-Black racism and to promote the Black community and culture,” said Mayor Kevin Ashe. “Each term of four years presents the opportunity for residents to apply to sit on the Taskforce, and lead the critically important work of striving for an equitable, diverse, and inclusive community. I am proud to be part of the efforts accomplished by the PABRT to date, and look forward to continuing this meaningful work.”
In its first term, the Taskforce made a significant impact in the community and successfully completed a variety of initiatives, including:
- Community Events – the PABRT participated in City events, including Canada Day and the Cultural Fusion Festival, hosting booths with interactive activities to engage residents and generate awareness about the Taskforce.
- Powerfully Informed – the Taskforce coordinated initiatives and information sessions to spread awareness about the 2022 Municipal Election, profile the Candidates, and, promote civic engagement among Black residents.
- Youth Academic Engagement Strategy – the PABRT developed and implemented a strategy to help support Black youth (Grades 9 to 12) in their pursuit of post-secondary education.
- Black Joy Holiday Experience – the Taskforce partnered with the Durham Family and Cultural Centre to present a special pop-up market, where local Black-owned businesses were invited to showcase their products. Light refreshments, a DJ, and additional entertainment was also provided by Black performers and artists.
The Taskforce will meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7 pm. Qualifications include the skills, knowledge, and lived experience required to contribute effectively to the PABRT’s goals and objectives. Membership will be sought on the basis of broad interest, understanding, and commitment to anti-Black racism in Pickering, in addition to specific expertise and interest related to civic engagement.
